A 58-year-old woman from White Creek has been arrested by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office following an investigation into alleged welfare fraud involving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Authorities report that Michele M. Tobin failed to disclose unearned income on her SNAP benefit applications between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022. This omission led to an overpayment of $5,679 in public assistance benefits.

Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy stated, “The investigation determined that between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022, Michele M. Tobin failed to report unearned income on SNAP benefit applications which resulted in an overpayment of $5,679 in public assistance benefits.”

Tobin has been charged with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, classified as a Class D felony. She was arraigned at Centralized Arraignment and released on her own recognizance. Tobin is scheduled to appear in Fort Edward Town Court at a later date.

Investigator C. Sullivan conducted the case with support from the Washington County Department of Social Services.
