Assemblyman Matt Simpson, representing Lake George and serving as the Ranking Minority Member on the Assembly Committee on Environmental Conservation, has expressed his views following a recent Joint Budget Hearing on Environmental Conservation and Energy.
Simpson noted a positive development in the governor's executive budget proposal, highlighting a $500 million allocation for clean water infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of this investment for rural communities facing financial constraints and infrastructure challenges. "Clean water is a fundamental necessity, especially for our rural communities that are grappling with limited funds and where infrastructure challenges can be more pronounced," he stated. However, he stressed the need for efficient allocation of these funds to maximize their impact.
Simpson also mentioned ongoing efforts to engage with state authorities to advocate for increased support from the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) specifically for the Adirondacks and nearby areas. He linked natural resource protection with economic sustainability, stating: "Protecting our natural resources goes hand-in-hand with protecting our way of life and economic sustainability."
Despite these advancements, Simpson voiced frustration over what he perceives as inconsistencies in state policy enforcement. He criticized Albany's mandates on electrification for homeowners, electric buses in schools regardless of district conditions, and ACT regulations on trucks that raise consumer costs. Simpson pointed out what he sees as a double standard when it comes to state practices: "While Albany forces electrification on homeowners...it conveniently disregards these policies when it is inconvenient for the state—such as its decision to use propane heating at the Ski Bowl lodge due to budgetary concerns." He concluded by calling for fairness and practicality in energy policies.
