Senator Jim Tedisco has commented on Governor Hochul's recent proposal for rebate checks. In his statement, Tedisco acknowledged the positive aspect of returning money to taxpayers but highlighted deeper economic issues in New York.
"Anytime the state is returning money back into the pockets of overburdened taxpayers is a good thing," he stated. However, he pointed out that "the economic woes New Yorkers are facing are based on systemic problems in our state that have been exacerbated by inflation." According to Tedisco, the rebate check proposal "is a band aid on a gushing wound that requires major surgery to heal."
Tedisco criticized the Governor's approach, saying, "I don’t believe the Governor is fully seeing the greater essence of the problem, which isn’t just about inflation." He emphasized that New York's affordability crisis and population decline are rooted in long-standing governmental practices like excessive mandates, spending, and taxing.
He advocated for a more comprehensive strategy to address these issues. "This can’t just be a one and done approach to providing tax relief," Tedisco argued. He proposed measures such as capping state spending similar to property taxes and advancing his 'Two-Star' legislation. This legislation aims to double property tax relief for residents and eliminate property taxes for seniors.
