Assemblyman Matt Simpson (R,C-Adirondack) has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Majority’s omnibus bill (A.8871), which he argues falls short in addressing key issues faced by correctional officers. Despite the largest strike in decades by these workers seeking better conditions, Simpson contends that the legislation fails to address their primary concerns.
“I am disappointed to see the HALT Act, which has endangered officers and inmates alike, remain untouched,” said Simpson, who sponsors a HALT Act repealer. He highlighted that the bill does not tackle critical staffing shortages or mandatory overtime, which he describes as inhumane.
Simpson noted that correctional officers are working triple shifts, affecting their health and family lives. “This so-called reform offers no protections or meaningful change for staff,” he added.
He further criticized the bill for omitting concerns raised by correctional officers regarding mandatory staffing requirements and overtime limits needed for safe prisons and fair treatment. “I stand with our correctional officers, both those still serving and those wrongfully terminated. I will fight relentlessly for real reforms that prioritize their well-being,” Simpson concluded.
