Assemblyman Matt Simpson (R,C-Adirondack) has voiced strong criticism of the NY HEAT Act, pointing to public opposition and concerns about affordability and energy reliability. According to a recent New York Energy Survey, 60% of respondents are against the HEAT Act, while 71% support maintaining the ability to choose their own energy sources.
Simpson stated, “The NY HEAT Act is an attack on the fundamental liberties of New Yorkers. This misguided legislation strips away our right to choose the energy that best suits our homes and budgets, forcing costly electrification while ignoring the clear will of the people. Eighty-two percent of New Yorkers say they prioritize affordability and 65% demand reliability, it’s evident this act is not only unpopular but also grossly out of touch. As energy bills soar and residents express concerns over their economic situation, we cannot afford policies that drive up costs and undermine the reliable, balanced energy approach that includes natural gas alongside renewables.”
The survey also found that 63% of voters prefer efforts to reduce cost burdens rather than pursuing a zero-carbon policy that could increase expenses. Additionally, 59% oppose stopping new natural gas supplies in favor of electrification.
Simpson argued that lawmakers should focus on policies that respect consumer choice. “The people have spoken clearly, and they want affordable, reliable energy and the freedom to make their own choices,” he said.
He urged his fellow legislators to reject the NY HEAT Act in favor of approaches that balance environmental goals with protecting household budgets.
