Assemblyman Matt Simpson has expressed his dissatisfaction with the recent omnibus bill (A.8871) passed by the Majority, which he argues does not adequately address key issues affecting correctional officers. Simpson, who represents the Adirondack region and is affiliated with the Republican and Conservative parties, voted against the bill.
Simpson criticized the legislation for failing to tackle significant concerns related to corrections reform. He highlighted that these issues have been brought to light by correctional officers who participated in a major strike seeking improvements in their working conditions.
“I am disappointed to see the HALT Act, which has endangered officers and inmates alike, remain untouched,” said Simpson. He is an advocate for repealing the HALT Act and pointed out that this bill does not address critical staffing shortages or mandatory overtime practices that affect officers’ health and family lives.
According to Simpson, “This so-called reform offers no protections or meaningful change for staff.” He emphasized that mandatory staffing requirements and limits on overtime are essential for ensuring safe prison environments and fair treatment of correctional officers.
Simpson affirmed his commitment to supporting correctional officers, including those who have been wrongfully terminated. “I stand with our correctional officers, both those still serving and those wrongfully terminated. I will fight relentlessly for real reforms that prioritize their well-being,” he concluded.
