Marianne M. Barker, a prominent figure in the Saratoga Springs business community, founded the Impressions of Saratoga gift shop in 1980. The store has grown into a notable woman-owned small business under her leadership, attracting both locals and tourists with its Saratoga and equestrian-themed offerings.
Barker, originally from Bellmore, New York, studied at SUNY Cobleskill where she met her husband Dave Barker. The couple moved to Saratoga Springs in 1980 after starting their business as a screen printing and embroidery shop in Cobleskill in 1978. They added a retail storefront in 1979 before relocating to Saratoga Springs, where the store remains at 368 Broadway. Since 2018, Marianne Barker has co-owned it with Maddy Zanetti.
In addition to Impressions of Saratoga, Barker has initiated several other businesses including The Bijou Bar during the 1980s, Racing Impressions which was affiliated with NYRA for eight years, and Bailey’s Café where they restored a historic building. In 2018, alongside her partner Zanetti, she opened The Dark Horse Mercantile to honor Saratoga’s reputation for unexpected victories on the track.
Barker is known for her commitment to supporting her community through financial contributions and volunteer work. She supports various charitable organizations such as animal rescues and has served on multiple boards including the Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association and the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. Her efforts have played a part in bolstering the local economy and enhancing quality of life in the area.
Outside of work, Marianne Barker enjoys spending time with friends and family along with hobbies like gardening, cooking, traveling, outdoor activities, and caring for her springer spaniels Cookie and Pupa.
