The City of Glens Falls announced on Apr. 16 that property owners who wish to challenge their property assessments may participate in Grievance Day, scheduled for Tuesday, May 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Mayor’s Conference Room at City Hall.

This announcement is important for residents who disagree with recent changes to their property assessments and want an opportunity to formally contest those values. The city emphasized that informal grievance appointments with KLW, the appraisal company overseeing reassessments, have ended, but a formal process remains available.

Property owners who received a Change of Assessment Notice in March and are still dissatisfied with their new assessment can submit a formal grievance to the Assessor’s office before May 26. Forms are available on the Assessor’s page of the city website or can be picked up directly from the office. A second letter will be sent out during the first week of May only if an additional change has been made; otherwise, no further notice will be given.

On Grievance Day itself, no appointments are necessary as people will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. A sign-in sheet will be provided at 4 p.m., and each person will have up to fifteen minutes to present their case before the Board of Assessment Review. The city clarified that attendance is not required unless new information or documentation needs to be added beyond what was already submitted.

Residents were advised that grievances should focus strictly on market value rather than taxes: “Your grievance should be solely based on the value of your property, not on taxes.” To support their claims, homeowners can use tools such as the Beacon Property Locator application found online through the Assessor’s webpage. This tool allows users to compare recent sales data for similar properties between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2025—the period used for current reassessments—and submit photographs or explanations regarding unique factors affecting market value.

Questions about this process can be directed by phone at (518)761-3807 x1.
