Rep. Elise Stefanik, a U.S. Congress member representing New York’s 21st district since 2015, expressed her concerns about the handling of antisemitism in higher education through a series of tweets on May 7, 2025. Her comments were directed towards Haverford College and its president.
On May 7, 2025, Stefanik tweeted that “Haverford’s president still doesn’t get it: higher ed has completely failed to confront the explosion of antisemitism.” She emphasized the accountability of educational institutions that receive taxpayer funding by stating, “As long as these schools take billions in taxpayer dollars, I’ll make sure they’re held accountable under federal law.” Tweet.
Later that day, at 16:23 UTC, she posted another tweet addressing a specific incident involving Haverford College’s president. In this post, she stated: “WATCH: I asked the Haverford College president about a professor who celebrated the Oct. 7 massacre. Her response? It could be ‘perceived in many ways.’ She couldn’t bring herself to say that celebrating mass terrorism is wrong. Just more of the same ‘depends on the context'” Tweet.
At 17:38 UTC on May 7, Stefanik reiterated her stance with another tweet highlighting her ongoing efforts against antisemitism within higher education. She noted that “Haverford’s president still doesn’t get it,” referring to her appearance at a committee hearing earlier that day and reaffirmed her commitment by saying, “I am proud to once again stand against antisemitism within higher education” Tweet.
Elise Stefanik was born in Albany, New York in 1984 and currently resides in Schuylerville. She graduated from Harvard University with an AB degree.
