Mia Collins, a junior at Ballston Spa High School, has achieved significant success in wrestling by winning the 2024 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Wrestling Championship. Competing in the 132-pound division, she triumphed over Alexa Doxey of Newfane High School at the Syracuse Research Corporation Arena and Events Center on January 26th.
During her journey to the championship title, Collins demonstrated remarkable skill. She secured a victory with a 38-second pin in her initial match, followed by a reversal that led to a 6-4 decision win in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she continued her strong performance with a second-period pin.
Collins’ achievements have earned her national recognition, ranking eighth in her weight class. Despite being only a junior, she also placed third at the Fargo Nationals held in North Dakota.
Senator Jim Tedisco praised Collins as “a trailblazer and a tremendous student scholar athlete,” highlighting her undefeated regular season record of 10-0 and noting that she is the first New York State Girls Wrestling Champion from Ballston Spa High School. He expressed optimism about her future athletic career.
Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh commended Collins for maintaining “a 98 grade point average as a senior” while excelling in wrestling. She expressed excitement about Collins’ future educational pursuits at Columbia University and speculated on potential appearances on ESPN or even at the Olympics during her college career.
